So, back in mid September I touched down in London!
as everyone warns you, it can be pretty grey most of the time . . .
. . . with some occasional blue patches . . .
. . . and if you're lucky . . .
. . . you might even get a clear sky!
I'm living in Shepherd's Bush, an area everyone says is filled with loads of Australians
That may have been the case, but now its full of West African and Caribbean migrants, who have brought with them sooooo many cool places to eat. Ever tried Ethiopian cuisine or proper jerk chicken with rice and peas? Nor had I.
There's a fantastic market just up the road, with great food, loads of exotic fruit and veg, plus a heap of spice stores
About 5 minutes up the road is the heart of the area, with loads of pubs, bars, restaurants and even a giant Westfield shopping centre.
Plus there's Shepherd's Bush Green
Even better, just across the road from me is Ravenscourt Park, a huge park with some nice wide open fields (read: LOTS OF OFF-LEASH DOGGOS 😍 🐕 🐺 🐩 😍 )
There's also a pond with birds and stuff
I've never had a "real" autumn/fall before . . . (being from Australia)
It's a great area to live in, in the west of London and not too far from everything, just a short tube ride to get to College
Being at the Royal College of Music is pretty great. It's also slightly strange studying somewhere so old, being that in Australia if a building is older than 60 years it's probably heritage listed . . . People (mostly students from overseas) sometime say it's a little like studying at Hogwarts . . . You can see why . . .
But Hogwarts is getting a facelift at the moment! They're building a new performance venue, more teaching spaces, and a museum to house the College's vast collection of historic instruments, books original scores/autographs and other collectables.
It's in a pretty great part of town too; just look at the view out the window of the composition studio!! that's Royal Albert Hall btw
It's also just up the road from the Natural History Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum
And Hyde Park is just a 2 minute walk away!
After having been in London for over a month, I hadn't yet gotten around to doing anything touristy. That all changed last week.
The view from up there is pretty spectacular
If you look closely, you can see Buckingham Palace!
Very important: I managed to find good coffee, both near to College and near to my apartment
More dangerously, there's a really, really, REALLY good ice cream store literally next door to my place . . .
Vanilla soft-serve with crumbled double-choc brownies, dipped in salted dark chocolate and coated in popcorn? YES PLEASE
Luckily my new friends all share my passion for good food and the finer things in life!
Wine 🍷, Cheese 🧀, and charcuterie 🥓 🥖 parties! 😍🤤😀
And they share my passion for the less-fine but equally satisfying things in life too . . .
(btw, Five Guys is the best, we need to get this in Australia)
When we're not stuffing ourselves full of good food . . .
. . . or attending a concert, many of which are super cheap . . .
I just love exploring London by night
It's kinda pretty
And every once in a while, it really pulls out all the stops . . .
